Scholarship Winners Announced

May 14, 2007

Two Roseville Area High School seniors are the winners of this years Soup It Up scholarships.  Christina Vernon is the winner of the $5,000 Frank A. Cox scholarship and Leah Grengs is the winner of the $5,000 Bryan T. McDonough scholarship.  Ryan Wagenman, Cox Insurance Associates agent, presented Christina and Leah their scholarhips at an award ceremony at the high school on May 14, 2007.

The Frank A. Cox scholarship is given in memory of Frank, who was the founder of Cox Insurance and believed strongly in higher education.  His legacy follows us today as he touched the lives of many with strong principals and great character.

The Bryan McDonough scholarship is given in memory of Bryan who died while serving in Iraq. Bryan graduated from Roseville Area High School in 2002 and after a brief time at St. Cloud Technical, joined the Minnesota National Guard knowing that he would most certainly be deployed to Iraq.  After hearing that the early casualties were soldiers in their 30’s with families, he decided that it shouldn’t be guys like that fighting the war, it should be people like him.  Bryan was extremely proud to serve his country and often said that it was the most important thing he had ever done.

Student Journal Entries

A journal entry received after Kevin Hines' presentation at St. Anthony/New Brighton School

My thoughts of the speaker were that it got me thinking about how
thankful I am to be alive. When my parents got a divorce it was the
hardest thing to me so I always thought about killing myself because it
seemed like everything was falling apart. The speaker is probably one
of my new heros for going through so much , living through it, and now
everything seems ok and getting married! Kevin seemed pretty normal
about it all and ok. I am just glad he did survive. I like how he
didn't try to make it so serious as well. One of my best friends use to
always say "I am going to kill myself" but I never tried to listen much
because she always said it and I figured she wouldn't ever, it was only
for attention. Now I will think twice about it when a friend says
that!

I was honored to be able to meet Kevin and hear his story. It was a
beautiful testimony for all people. God truly saved his life and I and
I am thankful that I got to hear his powerful story. It definitely
helped me understand the information more clearly.
